The Faculty of Science was established in 1987 with four constituent disciplines - Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. In 2007, the faculty was reorganized, resulting in the formation of 6 major disciplines or study areas; Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, and Petroleum Geoscience . Some majors such as Mathematics and Computer Science, have several different streams which allow students to focus in a particular field under that major. The faculty offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in each discipline. At the undergraduate level, the faculty offers BSc Generation NEXT degree. The faculty also offers Masters by Research and PhD in the 6 major areas. Applicants who are interested in postgraduate programmes by research are encouraged to contact the respective sections. The in-take for postgraduate programmes are normally scheduled twice per year.
Scholarships are available. Please refer to the postgraduate and research section for details.
A warm welcome to Faculty of Science (FOS). As one of the first faculty in UBD since its founding in 1985, FOS has played a central role in the university through its innovative curriculum and impactful research. FOS offers six majors i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Geology, Applied Physics and Mathematics. Through our flexible and broad-based curriculum, students enrolled in FOS can also take modules from other faculty thereby enhancing their all-round skills and consequently their marketability.
FOS has consistently produced high quality graduates who not only has excelled locally but internationally. In addition, FOS strong research culture no doubt plays an important role in instilling research interest as well as stimulating intellectual curiosity amongst our undergraduate students.

"Studying BSc Mathematics at UBD has been invaluable learning experience for me personally. Throughout the 4 years, I have gained a lot of knowledge and qualities that will be beneficial to me. The course enhanced my analytical skills as well as allowing me to share ideas and different problem solving approaches. Also, the supervision and positive feedback from lecturers throughout the course made a significant impact on my academic success and i am truly thankful to them"
"Academically, I started my UBD journey with Bachelor of Science in Biological Science, followed by Master of Teaching and finally Philosophy Doctorate in Energy Studies. Being a research student, I was given ample opportunity to present my findings in both local and international conferences and to publish them in high-impact journala, thus being able to equip myself for future highef research undertakings"
"Although UBD access to sensing research is still in the infancy stage, i took this as a challenge and platform to contribute in sensor development and simultaneously developed the skills and knowledge required. By the end of my PhD programme, I have published five research articles in reputable international journals and contributed to a book chapter for an international publication. Also, as the result of my PhD research, UBD has filed an international patent, which shows the importance of the research outcome. The results of this research will have an important social impact in the multidisciplinary field of sensor devices."
"My academic journey in UBD started in August 2013 as a Master student in the Computing and New Media Programme. Upon completion of the programme, I was very fortunate to be considered for the PhD in Computer Science programme which I successfully completed and graduated in2019. Based on my 5 years' graduate student experience in UBD, I can summarise UBD in three broad points, Firstly, UBD's global connectivity with some of the leading institutions of higher learning makes it such a rewarding place to pursue your studies, especially for research-based degrees. Secondly, the willingness of the state and the University to fund beneficial research makes UBD and Brunei a very pro-research and innovation environment for the ambitious and the hardworking minds. Thirdly, the peacefulness and friendly nature of Brunei and Bruneians makes studying in UBD a highly sought for and recommended experience. These three aspects embody a lot of other amazing experiences awaiting any prospective UBD student. I can't thank UBD and Brunei enough for this great opportunity that not only finally got me a title 'Dr' but turned me into a better human being. Long Live UBD, Long Live the People of Brunei Darussalam.
