The Faculty of Science (FOS) hosted a Seminar by its Eminent Visiting Professor, Michael Yu Wang, on “Soft Robotics” on the 18th January at the Lab 1.21, Faculty of Science. The Dean of FOS (Dr Abby Tan), and Prof Dr Namal Arosha Senanayake were present during the seminar.

Professor Wang was invited under UBD’s Eminent Visiting, Professor and Visiting Appointment (EVPVA) Scheme. As a distinguished expert visiting UBD, he delivered a public lecture, chaired a symposium and shared his professional expertise and network through his research collaborations.

Professor Wang holds positions in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering and Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, HKUST. He is also a Founding Director of HKUST Robotics Institute and Editor–in-Chief for IEEE Trans of Automation Science and Engineering. His expertise is the frontier research of robotics, automation, autonomous systems, multi-functional materials and structures and additive manufacturing for future of Science and Technology. In recognition of his scientific achievements, Prof Wang received the Research Excellence Awards of CUHK (2008) and ASME Design Automation Award in 2013. He is a fellow of ASME, HKIE and IEEE.

As part of his visit to UBD, Professor Wang visited some of the Computer Science research labs, and was impressed with the research activities in the advanced fields of mechatronics and habitation. This is an area that Professor Wang would be pleased to establish further together as it is an area currently actively pursued by the HKUST Robotics Institute. He hopes that this will strengthen collaboration ties with UBD.
