FOS hosts 3rd Joint Symposium between Osaka University and Bruneian Higher Education Institutions


On the 2nd November 2019, the Faculty of Science hosted the 3rd Joint Symposium between Osaka University and Bruneian Higher Education Institutions. The symposium was officiated by Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education. “Brunei Darussalam is fortunate to have such partnerships that enables us to progressively move towards reaching the global standard in research and innovation as well as improving the quality of our lecturers and students,” said Dr. Haji Azman in his welcoming remarks.


The symposium was officiated by Guest of Honour, Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education.




Also present were Yang Mulia Datin Dr. Dayang Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Vice-Chancellor of UBD; Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector of UNISSA; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Ady Syarmin bin Hj Md Taib, Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB; representatives from governmental bodies, professors from Osaka University and researchers and students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

The symposium was divided into three sessions, each focused on a different area of science. The first session focuses on the area of Bioresource and Biotechnology facilitated by Professor Masayoshi Arai from Osaka University (OU). Dr. Hartini Haji Mohd. Yasin and Dr. Fairuzeta Haji Md. Ja’afar, from the Chemical Sciences Programme and Dr. Yasuaki Tanaka from the Environmental and Life Sciences Programme, all gave talks in this session, along with relevant academics from OU and UTB.


The second session on NanoTechnology and Photonics was facilitated by Professor Dr. Eiichi Tamiya from OU. Representing UBD research was Dr. Minhaz Uddin Ahmed from the Chemical Sciences Programme, who gave his talk on “From Biomarker discovery to detection: Halal food analysis in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD)”.


The final scientific session of the joint symposium was on Halal Science and Technology facilitated by Professor Dr. Quamrul Hasan from OU. Academics from OU and UNISSA, which focused on areas of halal science and technology and exploring the Halalan Thayyiban aspect in food quality and safety.


This symposium then proceeded with a poster session showcasing current research works of students from the three higher education institutions. Representing UBD were poster presentations by MSc students from the Chemical Sciences Programme, Ms Siti Bazlaa Najlaa under the supervision of Dr. Fairuzeta Ja’afar, Dr. Hartini Yasin and AP Dr. Anwar Usman; and Ms Nur Shaidatul Najihah binti Matussin under the supervision of Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan, Dr. Tan Ai Ling and Dr. Mohammad Hilni Harunsani and MSc student from the Chemical Engineering Programme from the Faculty of Integrated Technologies, Ms Nur Farah Izzan Binti Hj Mohamed Jefri under the supervision of Dr. Saifullah Abu Bakar and Dr. Fairuzeta Ja’afar.



Representing UBD in the poster presentation session were MSc students from the Chemical Sciences Programme, Ms Siti Bazlaa Najlaa under the supervision of Dr. Fairuzeta Ja’afar, Dr. Hartini Yasin and AP Dr. Anwar Usman; and Ms Nur Shaidatul Najihah binti Matussin under the supervision of Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan, Dr. Tan Ai Ling and Dr. Mohammad Hilni Harunsani.


The symposium ended with discussion sessions between academics from the parallel sessions and combined presentation sessions on moving forward with collaboration plans. The symposium concluded with a discussion on the measure of success of the collaboration between OU and Higher Educational Institutions of Brunei Darussalam. All sessions resulted in fruitful discussion and highlighted further potential collaborative activities between the Universities.


The collaboration between OU and the Higher Educational Institutions in Brunei Darussalam officially commenced on 22 February 2019 under the project of Osaka University-ASEAN Campus. Its establishment coincided with the opening of Osaka University Office (ASEAN Campus) in Brunei Darussalam by the Executive Vice President of Osaka University, Professor Kawahara.
