In September 2017, two researchers from the Chemical Sciences Department took part in the Consortium on Development of Functional Food based on Antioxidants among ASEAN Members held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), Bangna, Bangkok, Thailand. This workshop was organised by the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR) as part of the 3-day Food ingredient Asia 2017 (Fi Asia) exhibition devoted entirely to food ingredients.

The event was officiated by Thailand’s Minister of Science and Technology, Her Excellency Dr. Atchaka Sibunruang and included opening remarks from Mr. Manu Leopairote, the Chairman of UBM Asia (Thailand) Co. Ltd., followed by Ms. Jaruwan Suwannasat, the Director of Exhibition and Event from the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

As part of the workshop, participants from each ASEAN member country also had the chance to visit an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) company, Kovic Kate International, a company that produces products that may be marketed by another manufacturer. Such companies are useful for small business lacking the necessary equipment to tackle mass production. During the workshop, researchers from each participating ASEAN member country gave a presentation on the research currently going on in their home country in the area of functional food development based on anti-oxidants. Both representatives from FOS, Dr. Hartini Yasin and Dr. Fairuzeta Ja’afar focused on anti-oxidant studies on local food products.
