Applied Physics students share discovery year (DY) experience with Department of Civil Aviation

For 14 weeks starting from January, two students from the Applied Physics programme received first-hand experience of the inner workings of the Department of Civil Aviation.
Placed in the Air Traffic Services Unit, Haji Abdul Wafiy bin Haji Baha’s daily responsibilities included being part of the ground checking and landing equipment safety maintenance team at the Brunei International Airport runway, an area usually off-limits to civilians. Wafiy commented that the placement gave him a valuable introduction to the world of aeronautics and made him aware of the department’s important role in national security and safety through monitoring and directing aircraft in Bruneian airspace.

Another student, Anisah Salwa Binti Haji Mohd Don, was placed in Air Navigation Services (a combination of Air Traffic Services and Aeronautical Telecommunication Services). Her work focused more on keeping track of and reporting on drone activities withinBruneian airspace and learning about the regulations relating to the use of drones withinBruneian airspace. These regulations are very important in order to ensure a safe and free flight path for airplanes. Anisah enjoyed her placement, particularly the opportunity to work in a team and being part of an organisation, which also in turn allowed her to develop a network of connections which will be useful in her future career.
