IoT-Powered Hydroponics Farming System for Stem-cutting Propagation Techniques

Abstract

Climate change has been in the leading discussion and forefront of debates, where humankind has tried various ways to mitigate it. One of the initiatives is planting trees; however, planting trees takes a long time, typically ten to twenty years, from the growth to the maturity stage. Therefore, by combining stem-cutting and hydroponic techniques, the planted trees may have the chance to grow more quickly. Furthermore, by implementing smart agriculture technology such as Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems, the hydroponic parameters can be displayed on the cloud, and the data can be saved to cloud storage. This project focuses on making an IoT-powered system for multiple setups of stem-cutting hydroponics with different parameters as the first of its kind as no other research has been done in the area to the best of our knowledge. Following the project’s progress, the completed prototype can not only transfer the data measured from the hydroponic system to the cloud, but it can also save those data in its cloud data storage, allowing data analytics capabilities and real-time visualization of data. The measured data includes pH, nutrients (EC), water temperature, the surrounding temperature, and humidity which will eventually be used for monitoring the progress of our stem-cutting hydroponic setups.
