BSc in Geosciences

Geology is one of the most attractive options for students in the Faculty of Science. Brunei is a petroleum-producing country and several leading companies are located here, and geologists are in demand across mineral resources, environmental management and construction.

The BSc in Geosciences is a three-year GenBESTARI Major Programme built on fieldwork, laboratory skills and data-driven earth science.

Degree Structure

The degree totals 120 modular credits: 60 MC of Programme Modules in Geosciences, 20 MC of Advanced Specialisation, the 8-MC Lestari Pathway, 12 MC of Gateway Modules, and a 20-MC Discovery Year taken in Semester 4.

A maximum of 36 MC may be counted from Level 1000 modules; a minimum of 24 MC must come from Level 3000 Major modules. Students are typically expected to complete their Programme Modules (excluding the Research Project, SPG-3201) before progressing to Advanced Specialisation.

Teaching and assessment

To obtain the BSc in Geosciences you must comply with the regulations of the University and Faculty. Modules combine lectures with practical sessions, and assessment comprises a final examination and coursework, including mid-term tests, short projects and practical assessments. Students participate in field trips where they acquaint themselves with geological formations, processes and phenomena.

In the final year, students conduct a research project (SPG-3201, 8 MC) that trains them to collect, synthesise and interpret geological data independently.

Facilities

The Geology Group is equipped with polarising microscopes, a Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer, X-ray Fluorescence Analyser, Digital Point Counting System, seismograph, resistivity meter and magnetometer, gamma detector and luminescence dating spectrometer, as well as fully equipped laboratories for sample processing, rock thin sections and wet chemistry. Industry-standard software — Petrel, IP, Kingdom Suite, MinPet and more — is used in several modules for training in data processing.

Careers

Graduates participate in exploration surveys, offer their services across many industries, work as private consultants, or continue to postgraduate study (MSc and PhD). Geologists today have prolific careers with oil, gas and mining companies, and with survey, environmental and engineering companies; they are also recruited by private and government organisations.

Entry requirements and how to apply

Admission to all five FOS Major Programmes uses the same entry and English-language requirements, and students declare their Major by Week 8 of the first semester.
