The Applied Physics Major is a package of modules that offers a broad and well-rounded preparation in the physics encountered in various fields ranging from aeronautical, financial, medical, IT, petro-chemical to various technical industries. The core modules for the GenNext Bachelor of Science major in Applied Physics contain basic, intermediate and advanced topics to cover necessary degree level knowledge in physics.
In general, mathematics is a requirement for those who are interested in the study of pure and applied physics, as the programme involves the use of some mathematical methods. It will therefore be beneficial to the students if they have prior or concurrent exposure to the mathematics. It must be emphasized that the responsibility is on the students to take necessary steps to ensure that they will not be deficient in any required preparations. In addition to essential elements of a GenNext degree and laboratory skills, computing skills and some applications of physics are also incorporated in the modules.
Teaching and assessment
Students will attend lectures, tutorial, seminars and hands-on practical classes. As part of their major core requirement, students will also conduct research projects under the supervision of academic staff. Assessment methods vary depending on the type of modules taken and most of the modules involve both coursework-based assessment (such as practical reports, assignments, tests and seminars) and examination.
Facilities
The major instruments available in the Applied Physics laboratories are UV-vis, fluorescence and Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometers, thermal evaporator, optical microscope, particle size analyser, bomb calorimeter, tensile test machine and thermogravimetric analyser (TGA).
Careers
Applied Physics graduates from UBD are working with various Government and private agencies. Some possibilities are Oil and Gas sector, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Communications, research organizations.
